What is an online payment authentication service?

Verified by Visa, MasterCard SecureCode and American Express SafeKey are strong authentication services that improve the security of online payments. They were developed by the international card companies Visa, MasterCard and American Express. When a purchase is made, the service verifies both parties of the transaction: the customer and the vendor.

We recommend that you make your purchases on the websites of online retailers that use Verified by Visa, MasterCard SecureCode and American Express SafeKey authentication. This authentication ensures that the vendor is connected to the service via its own bank.

When making a payment, you verify your identity with your personal banking credentials or separate user identification provided by the bank. SafeKey authentication is used when paying with an American Express card. No information you provide, such as your banking credentials, will be disclosed to the vendor. The vendor will only receive a confirmation of the success of the authentication in the form of a sales permit.

You can use the service with a Visa Debit, Visa Credit, Visa Electron, MasterCard Debit, MasterCard Credit or American Express card. Check with your own bank whether your card is automatically included in the service or whether it needs to be added separately.

Note that some banks always require the use of an authentication service when making online purchases.
