TAMPERE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA: INTERNATIONAL CITY ORCHESTRA
The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra is a full-scale symphony orchestra comprising 97 musicians, performing in the largest concert hall of the Nordic Countries, the Tampere Hall. The orchestra is exceptionally multicultural, with nearly one-third of its 100-plus employees hailing from abroad, representing over 10 different nationalities.
British conductor Matthew Halls began his three-year term as the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in August 2023. Halls, the twelfth chief conductor of the orchestra and the third foreigner in this role, expresses enthusiasm for his position and exciting plans for the upcoming seasons leading the orchestra. Halls is a distinguished conductor who regularly guest conducts top orchestras worldwide.
Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra’s repertoire extends beyond orchestral concerts, encompassing annual opera and ballet performances. The orchestra also hosts its chamber music series (Afternoon of Fauns) and strongly invests in music education for children and young people. The orchestra's recordings have garnered acclaim and awards. Known for its versatility and boundary-pushing productions, Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra has collaborated with Finnish rock band Eppu Normaali and internationally renowned rock guitarist Steve Vai. The orchestra has last visited in Japan and France.
Established in 1930, the Orchestra has been led by eminent conductors such as Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Hannu Lintu and John Storgårds. Rouvali was named the Honorary Conductor of Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra at the conclusion of his ten-year tenure in the spring of 2023.
