OASBB Tiernapojat
Oulu All Star Big Band brings back to Oulu the delightful and acclaimed big-band adaptation of the traditional Finnish Christmas play Tiernapojat, first performed in Oulu in 2022.
The Tiernapojat concert will be performed at Teatterikuoppa in Haukipudas on Saturday, 28 November, and at Pohjankartano Hall in Oulu on Tuesday, 15 December. The concerts will open with the Oulu Youth Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Jaakko Jauhiainen, taking the audience into a jazzy Christmas atmosphere.
In the concert version of Tiernapojat, arranged by Rasmus Soini and Siiri Partanen, familiar and stylized melodies are enriched with composed orchestral introductions and interludes, as well as improvisation. The rich sound of the big band and the changing moods create a unique musical experience that sets the scene for Christmas and is sure to leave a lasting impression.
The concert features four outstanding singers from Oulu or with roots in the city: Jussi Kaartinen, Jami Kontturi, Okko Laurila and Susanna Sirviö.
The concert is conducted by composer Rasmus Soini, Artistic Director and Conductor of Sointi Jazz Orchestra. In addition to his work with Sointi Jazz Orchestra, Soini has conducted various big bands around Finland and writes commissioned works for large ensembles. In addition to Oulu All Star Big Band, he has collaborated with, among others, UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, Turku Jazz Orchestra and Jyväskylä Big Band.
Sointi Jazz Orchestra premiered Tiernapojat at Christmas 2014. The work has also been released as an album.
