Swan Lake is one of those magical works that everyone has heard of, but few have ever seen performed by a top-class classical company. Tchaikovsky composed the ballet in 1876, but it took until 1895 for it to be premiered in St. Petersburg, choreographed by Marius Petipa.
The Marseilles-born Petipa, who reigned over Russian dance for fifty years, had no idea that his ballets would be performed all over the world after his death, and that his Swan Lake, which was never performed outside Russia during his lifetime, would become the most popular of the Romantic ballets a century after its creation.
