Legends of Lapland in Helsinki – Chamber Orchestra of Lapland – John Storgårds – Katarina Barruk & Niillas Holmberg
The Chamber Orchestra of Lapland is joined by two powerful Sámi voices – Katarina Barruk and Niillas Holmberg. Conducted by John Storgårds, this concert brings together Northern storytelling and poetry with the orchestra’s symphonic resonance.
The first half of this performance (which includes an intermission) features Luovus – Symphony for Yoik and Chamber Orchestra by Holmberg and the orchestra. In this piece, yoik and recitation take center stage as the orchestra builds an airy, precisely tuned soundscape around them. After the intermission, Katarina Barruk and her band take the stage to perform Barruk’s music, reimagined through orchestral arrangements interpreted by the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland.
Katarina Barruk is a Ume Sámi singer-songwriter and a leading figure in modern Sámi music. Known for her clear voice and powerful yoik, her performances are emotionally intense moments where nature and music converge. Niillas Holmberg, based in Utsjoki, is an award-winning Sámi author, screenwriter, and musician, as well as a master of the Northern Sámi yoik tradition. His performances are characterized by improvisation and a dense, compelling atmosphere.
The widely esteemed conductor John Storgårds holds several permanent conducting posts in Finland and abroad and was appointed Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in 2023. Throughout his career as both a violinist and conductor, Storgårds has premiered hundreds of works. The Chamber Orchestra of Lapland, recognized with numerous national and international awards and nominations, was the first Finnish chamber orchestra to perform at the BBC Proms.
