Savonlinna Opera Festival
World-class opera in a medieval lakeside castle in Savonlinna, Finland. Opera as you’ve never experienced it – in a medieval castle on the shores of Lake Saimaa, in the beautiful city of Savonlinna in Eastern Finland.
3 July – 1 August 2026

Italy arrives in Savonlinna
When the summer evening light shimmers on the waves of Lake Saimaa and the ancient stone walls of Olavinlinna reverb echoes across the water, a moment begins – a moment whose enchantment has captured opera lovers and curious travelers alike, year after year.
In the summer of 2026, that moment resonates with music and melody – sounds that have drifted through narrow streets as whispered lullabies and risen over great squares as voices of collective strength, generation after generation.
That resonance is Italian in origin. It leads us into a summer of stories – of love and despair, loyalty and betrayal, fragility and defiance.

Olavinlinna, a unique stage
Olavinlinna, the world's most northerly surviving medieval castle, serves as an invaluable cultural heritage site and museum. As a venue for the Savonlinna Opera Festival, it is magnificent and truly unique – though extraordinarily challenging.
Since the castle has no storage space or permanent festival structures, the entire venue must be rebuilt every summer, with technical equipment and sets ferried across the river from the quay.
The festival's roots stretch back to the summer of 1912, but the story began even earlier. When Finnish soprano Aino Ackté attended a political meeting at the castle in 1907, she immediately recognised its remarkable potential. Already celebrated at opera houses across the world and a passionate patriot, Ackté saw in the medieval walls – built in 1475 and set amid lake scenery of supernatural beauty – the perfect stage for Finnish music that was just beginning to flourish.

What the audience says: Why Savonlinna has one of Europe's best opera festivals
Ever since renowned Finnish soprano Aino Ackté turned her dream into reality and launched the Savonlinna Opera Festival way back in 1912, the event has provoked a vast range of emotions amongst its visitors. Once inside Olavinlinna, the world’s northernmost medieval castle still standing, it’s easy to understand why.
“The place is fantastic, colours are beautiful. The environment enhances the beauty of the performances. The colours and the lights of nature are just overwhelming.”
“It combines high quality opera with an unforgettable summer experience.”
