The dog (koira), or domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris, formerly Canis familiaris), is a domesticated and selectively bred form of the grey wolf (Canis lupus). It belongs to the class of mammals and the family Canidae.
The dog is the oldest animal domesticated by humans. In the early stages of domestication, dogs were useful as alert guards and scavengers. Dogs have been used — and are still used — as draft animals, herders, and in hunting. However, the roles of dogs have expanded to include, among others, narcotics detection dogs, guide dogs, hypoallergenic dogs, and search and rescue dogs. In many of these tasks, a dog’s keen sense of smell is utilized.
