Life is a game
The new Opera Festival production for this season is the intense, visually dazzling Queen of Spades bringing to life the society circles of Romantic-era St. Petersburg. The opera is based on Pushkin’s story of a gambler, Herman, with an obsession for making money and a mysterious countess who, it is whispered, knows the winning cards. Naturally there is also some love woven into the plot – and the constant presence of death.
Jere Erkkilä is known for directions that respect the music and always have an inspired twist. “Tchaikovsky’s fine music offers an opportunity to add an element of surprise and very special splendour,” he says. “It also has some great choral and dance scenes that the audience can simply enjoy.”
Tchaikovsky wrote The Queen of Spades in only 44 days. Judging from the entries in his diary, he closely identified with the desperate Herman while he was composing it. He considered The Queen of Spades his best opera.
